Except warn someone they’re being recorded by the iPhone’s video camera. What happened to the red light of yesteryear? My Mac has one sitting right at the top of the display. Turn on FaceTime or Skype or QuickTime and the green recording light comes on.
Don’t ask why it’s green instead of red but it doesn’t matter. As soon as the light comes on you know the Mac’s camera is in use. Why doesn’t iPhone have a recording light on the backside where the cameras are located?
I ask not because I want one– I don’t really care– but because Facebook figured out a way to activate the iPhone’s camera without getting permission first. What happens when you download and run a photo or video camera app? iPhone asks permission to use the camera.
Facebook for iOS activates the iPhone’s camera without permission.
Sure, it’s a bug and it will get fixed, plus, camera access only shows up under certain scrolling circumstances, but still, something is wrong on at least three levels.
First, it means an app can be given permission to use the camera without permission. Second, look for yet another iOS update soon (or, a Facebook update), and third now it is obvious that video recording cameras need a red light or green light or some kind of visible notification that says, “Hey, I’m recording you.”
Just so you know, iPhones do have a background recording indicator which shows up as a red banner in the top left of the display. Foreground recording apps have nothing to indicate the device is, well, recording anything
Apple needs to fix the Facebook bug to ensure it doesn’t happen again, but, so what; big deal? If there is no indicator on the backside camera for recording then whoever you record may not know they’re being recorded.
Is that what Apple wants? Is that what users want? Should it be a toggle option?
I’m on board with the latter. In other words, a red or green recording light should be the default, but also be capable of being turned off in Settings. You can’t do that on the Mac, but it makes sense to have to option on iPhone.
For now, I just tell people I’m not recording because the little red light is not on.
