That works because I see Apple and Tesla have two problems. Tesla has an unstable leader, great products, but in dire need of money and discipline. Apple has a very stable management team, no Apple car, plenty of money, and the company’s famed discipline.
See? That’s a prediction headline. Or, looked at another way, it’s merely a headline of the future; a headline you’re likely to read sometime early next year when the news cycles are slowed down after the holidays.
The more I think about it, the more I realize Apple needs Tesla to help jump start its own car manufacturing project, and Tesla needs some of Apple’s money to make the future happen.
Alright, not a future of Apple Car. Already we have too many Apple things as the iEverything has died off. iMac, iTunes, iPhoto, iPod, iPhone, iPad gave way to Apple TV, Apple Pay, Apple Music, etc. In retrospect, Apple did the right thing with the Beats purchase. Beats headphones, love’em, hate’em, or leave’em, are a major brand.
Tesla is a major brand and Apple would do well to swap some stock with Tesla shareholders– to avoid a big cash outlay– and keep Tesla what it is.
How does that not make sense for everyone involved?
Tesla CEO Elon Musk gets what he needs. A way out of his current predicament where sanity is in shorter supply than cash. Apple gets what it needs. An instant car brand and presence in the industry, and manufacturing facilities. It might not even take long to integrate Apple and Tesla because so many of the engineers have worked at both companies.
Tesla gets what it needs. First, a source of cash for pave the way for future Tesla models. Truck, Roadster, Model Y, and whatever else is on the drawing board of the sane parts of what is left of Elon Musk’s mind. Second, plenty of resources to get volume manufacturing into gear. Third, executive level management discipline. Fourth, improved panache via attachment to the Apple brand.
Even the stock market would appreciate Apple’s bold move into the industry of the future; autonomous vehicles.
It all starts with the headline of the future: “Apple To Buy Tesla With Stock.”
Easy, right? Apple has plenty of valuable stock to swap. Elon Musk gets some much needed rest.
