Yes, email spam is a scourge; an evil blight fostered onto mankind by the gods who would make us go mad before our destruction. Unless Microsoft, Apple, and Google get together to end spam forever, it will be here forever.
There is a way to reduce spam to nearly nothing on the Mac via an app we longtime Mac users know and love. It’s called SpamSieve and it works with Apple’s Mac Mail, Airmail, Outlook, and other email apps.
Simply put, SpamSieve blocks a large amount of basic spam upon installation, but also learns what kind of spam you get from your email accounts, and then begins to block those. Well, maybe block isn’t the right word. It filters all incoming email messages and puts the spam into a spam folder so you can check it. You know, just to make sure.
My experience through the years tells me that SpamSieve is about as good as it gets at blocking spam on the Mac. Yes, you can use Mail’s built-in Junk Mail filter, but SpamSieve seems to learn faster and doesn’t forget. I can’t say that about Mac Mail’s built-in Junk Mail.
OK, what does that have to do with killing spam on iPhone and iPad?
First, there are no spam killers for email applications on iPhone and iPad, so you need SpamSieve or Junk Mail filter on your Mac to block spam on your accounts so it won’t show up on your iPhone’s email app.
Second, it means you will need to make sure your Mac is running all the time because SpamSieve blocks email that would normally go to your account’s Inbox, therefore, showing up on Mac, iPhone, and iPad. By using SpamSieve my iPhone and iPad remain virtually free of spam.
If there another way?
If your email server has access to SpamAssassin, and many do, you can get the same kind of spam blocking that SpamSieve provides, but block it before it reaches your Mac, iPhone, or iPad. SpamAssassin assigns a score to each incoming message before sending it to your email app. If the total score is above a certain threshold, SpamAssassin marks it as ***SPAM*** so you can identify it easily.
I’ve been using SpamAssassin on most of my email accounts for a few years and I block any score above 3. Default is 5. 10 means all messages get through, including spam. 1 means almost nothing gets through except totally legitimate email messages. With SpamSieve and SpamAssassin at work, I have a Spam folder packed with spam and an Inbox packed with legitimate messages– Mac, iPhone, iPad.
