Remember the PIM? The personal information manager app. It was all the rage back in the day. It still is. Wouldn’t it be great if your Mac came with a personal information management app that let you save and organize absolutely everything you want– photos, text, bookmarks, snippets, or anything else– with a simple drag and drop? And wouldn’t it be better if you could get to those same files on Mac, iPhone, or iPad?
If your Mac’s Desktop is cluttered with everything that passes your eyeballs during the day then it’s time to de-clutter and bring it all together with the drag and drop organizational prowess built in to Together.
One Place, Anywhere
PIM’s, or, personal information managers, are numerous on the Mac, iPhone, and iPad, and many of them sync data back and forth with ease. The real challenge is finding a PIM that’s user friendly, not complicated, and just usable. To be fair, I’ve used Together for a number of years and I love it because it does what other PIM’s do not. It’s organized a bit like Photos or iTunes so it’s instantly familiar.
Together features a Library of everything you want to save. Notes, documents, photos, images, sounds, movies, bookmarks, PDFs, web pages– whatever the Mac can handle– and more are all saved in the Library.
That makes it like iTunes and Photos.
And like Photos’ albums and iTunes’ playlists, Together organizes everything the way you want, either as favorite groups, or groups of folders, or no groups, or many groups.
The coolest thing about Together, and what makes it more valuable and usable than most PIM’s is the way it gathers and stores files and information.
Drag and drop items to the Together pop out shelf. Simply grab whatever you want to save and drag it to the spot on the edge of the Mac’s screen where Together’s pop out shelf (see above) resides. Then, just drop the object into the appropriate folder. It’s that easy.
Together takes each object you drag into the shelf and stores it where you want it together. No clicks. No searching. No hierarchy to muddle through. Just drag it and drop where it needs to be.
Using Together means that all those personal information items won’t get lost. They’re all in the Library, and easily organized without effort. For items that are not dropped into pre-defined folders, Together holds them in the inbox until you’re ready to file them.
Together gives you an option to create stationery to match any file type. There’s a built-in navigation history for every item added to Together. Each item can be previewed and everything is autosaved and synchronized to other Macs via iCloud. Favorite items can even reside in the pop out sidebar making them easy to find and use.
What’s missing? For the Mac version, not much. I’d rather use Together as a PIM on my Mac than any other app. It’s that useful. But there’s also Together for iPhone and iPad.
Together also has an iPhone and iPad version that works much the same way (without the drag and drop, of course).
Together for iOS can use iCloud to sync files between iDevices and your Mac so much of what you collect is available wherever you are.
Caveats? Not much. The iOS version has improved dramatically in the past few years, but the interface is not as intuitive as on the Mac version.
