There’s spring cleaning. Finding dead rodents, bugs, and birds in the attic or basement. Cloth diapers. Health care paperwork. Home budget. And home inventory.
Home inventory is the one I can help you with because I found a pretty good way to take care of the effort that goes into anything with the word inventory in it (short of hiring someone else to do it; and I’ve thought of that).
All you need is a Mac, the Home Inventory app (and a couple of help apps that actually help), a house, apartment, mobile home, camper, or condo with stuff to inventory, and someone to sit and drink with you until the urge to inventory your home goes away.
Home Inventory (the app; not the project) is exactly what you expect it to be, only easier than expected. This elegant Mac app lets you add inventory items from photos, customize the database fields and layouts to match your belongings, and is smart enough to track more than just stuff.
For example, use Home Inventory to inventory and track your belongings, yes, but also use it to keep a history of your home or condo’s value each year, monitor a maintenance schedule for specific chores– air filters, lawn or garden fertilization, painting and washing the house, and anything else that needs to be scheduled.
Capturing items to include in the home inventory is as easy as walking around the home with your smartphone, take a picture, then one-by-one drop them into Home Inventory.
Use Home Inventory to add a value to every item in the inventory; even using multiple currencies. Keep the whole inventory password protected, and use multiple inventories as needed– one for home, one for office, one for a family member or neighbor.
Home Inventory is great for tracking product warranty and perfect for making sure you have enough insurance to cover your losses in the even of a theft or natural disaster.
And, if you have a scanner or good smartphone camera, use Home Inventory to record and store valuable papers– receipts, warranty information, product manuals.
Good so far, right? Now here is where it gets fun.
Home Inventory has two companion for the iPhone and iPad. Home Inventory Mobile Backup is a free app which simply backs up your entire inventory database so it’s with you wherever you and your device go (password protected, of course).
And, to make creating the home inventory easier in the first place, there’s the free Home Inventory Photo Remote app for iPhone or iPad. Simply walk through your home and add items to the Home Inventory app on your Mac by using Wi-Fi. Add all the details later on your Mac (much easier to do than on the iPhone).
The iPhone app even comes with a built-in barcode scanner which makes it even easier to add barcodes, which then looks up the information on the internet so you get more detail on each piece in the inventory.
Creating an inventory of your possessions is no fun, and ranks up there with dead rodents and birds and bugs in the attic, but using the right app makes it much less painful, almost fun, much faster than expected, and in the end you get a detailed home inventory which is always a good thing.
