Based upon the number of great teaching aids for Mac users, it’s a wonder our offspring are not all Mensa members.
We have so many ways to learn and computers are basic to nearly every child’s life these days. Of course, games probably out number education apps by an order of magnitude. Or two. Or three.
My latest find for the Mac using educator is called MathBoard Fractions. This elegant Mac app is inexpensive, easy for students to use, and helps them through the difficulty of learning fractions.
MathBoard Fractions walks students through a variety of instructions and quizzes so they learn about proper and improper fractions, how to match a fraction to a quantity, as well as adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions.
My only real quibble is the 1960s chalkboard layout. Really? We’re into the 21st century and the digital chalkboard is green with white numbers. Well, at least it’s not a black blackboard.
The app comes with a built-in Problem Solver which helps students learn to simplify fractions, determine the greatest common factor, and even compare and order fractions. You can control learning levels, too, by using maximum value, denominator range, common denominators, whole numbers, and create timed and non-timed learning activities.
Each student using MathBoard Fractions can have their progress tracked, both for individual learning activities, and overall progress.
Other than the chalkboard skeumorphism, MathBoard Fractions is a great learning tool, and a good companion to basic MathBoard.
