Here’s a quick look at the three (and only three) Mail app plugins that grace my Mac. Each has a value not easily obtained from other utilities, and help to make Mail a safer and more productive place to live (how much of our daily lives is spent using Mail?).
The first on the list is the very popular SpamSieve. It’s a Bayesian spam filter that works much better than Apple’s built-in Junk Mail filter. If you have a spam problem, this is the utility you want.
SpamSieve watches you email messages and blocks incoming spam. You can have a whitelist, a blacklist, and over time SpamSieve learns the type of messages you usually receive so it performs better over time.
Configuration options are extensive, but you can also just set it and forget it and SpamSieve works wonders. If spam mail gets through you can tell SpamSieve that a message is spam so it learns as you use it.
Second on my list is pure eye candy in the form of Herald, a pop up notification system plugin for Mail. Instead of a simple notification that you’ve received a message, Herald’s notification has a small toolbar so from whatever app you’re using you can quickly delete, save, reply to the message without switching over to Mail.
As it is with SpamSieve, Herald has plenty of configuration options as well as options to customize the pop up window. I treat Herald as an extension of Mail which lets me respond faster without leaving the app I’m in at the time.
Finally, the third Mail utility on my list is a favorite. It’s called SendLater. It does what the title says. It lets you send email messages later instead of immediately when you click send. You can send messages x-number of minutes or hours later, or at a specific time and date.
SendLater is just awesome. I use it to send messages at all hours of the day but keep them confined to working hours so co-workers and friends don’t think I’m online and available all the time. It’s easily setup, and easy to use. Set the time you want the message to be sent, click Send Later.
Mail is something of a gargantuan beast of an app with many options, but few that actually make using email easier, better, more efficient. SpamSieve, Herald, and SendLater are apps that do.
