I’ve heard it said that John Lennon called McCartney’s songs ‘all pizza and fairytales.’ Maybe so, but McCartney was the musician with the long career of songwriting and performing while Lennon mostly complained about everything up to his death.
So it is with Apple’s detractors these days. They complain about everything while Apple continues to serve up a delicious blend of pizza and fairy tales, especially in iOS 7. What happened to the black and white and flat all over design conjured up by the Apple is Doomed crowd.
Instead, Apple provided a lighthearted iOS 7 that adds depth to a slightly flatter look, minus a bit of the gloss of previous versions. It remains to be seen whether Apple’s hundreds of millions of iOS customers will love what’s new, but iOS 7 shows that Apple can still surprise, and still keep a secret, both hallmarks of Steve Jobs’ reign.
While most modern smartphone OSs have become more complicated and complex, Apple has zig zagged, or, rather zagged while others zigged, to a simpler approach. Hundreds of millions of smartphone users already know what icon buttons are so we don’t need the gloss and shadows anymore.
Gone are the vestigial remnants of Steve Jobs. No green felt on Game Center. No stitched leather or linen. What should be obvious has become more obvious. Some of the buttons don’t appear as buttons but are obvious as to intent.
Here’s a perfect example in the FaceTime interface.
The old buttons are gone and replaced by a flatter look that isn’t even a button yet it’s obvious that it’s a button without it being a visual button.
The depth and dimension aspect of iOS 7 needs to be seen to be fully appreciated in day to day use, so I’ll reserve my opinion on the value, but isn’t it obvious that Apple was thinking entirely different than Google, or Microsoft, or BlackBerry, or Nokia?
iOS 7 might be a little bit of pizza and fairy tales, but, hey, who doesn’t like pizza, and what’s wrong with a fairy tale now and again?
Apple has remained true to itself, continues to surprise and delight, but, just like in a pizza, all the major food groups are present.
