And I always felt bad for the Federation guy wearing the red shirt (mostly the mark of sure death). What I had trouble figuring out about Star Trek was the star date system and warp speed. Guess what? There’s an app for that.
Calculate Warp Speed, Sulu!
Just in case you didn’t know, the Enterprise (from Star Trek Classic to the series Enterprise) could travel faster than light– warp speed.
Just how fast is warp speed? How long would it take you to go from, say, earth to Vulcan at warp 5?
How far could the Voyager go at warp 9 in five days? Everyone knows that Voyager’s maximum speed is warp 9.975.
The app for that is Warp Speed Calculator. It’s a Mac Dashboard Widget that does the warp speed calculations for you. Enter two of three variables (speed, distance, time) and the widget will calculate the third variable and change it to equivalent units.
Shades of Star Trek TNG.
Years are converted to days, light-years are converted to parsecs, and warp factors to multiples of c.
The only thing missing in the widget is a star date converter. Fellow Sector 001 Mac users, there’s an online app for that. It converts 21st century dates to Star Trek Stardates.
