Surely you saw the recent flap over Katy Perry’s appearance with Elmo on Sesame Street. We have to agree with the one parent who said, “My kids see more skin at the beach.” Or the parent who pointed out that Disney’s princesses in Aladdin and The Little Mermaid were more scantily clad than pop princess Perry. Seems a tempest in a teapot to us.
But it did get us thinking about all the great shows we boomers had when we were kids. No one ever accused Mr. Green Jeans of wearing overalls that were too revealing, now did they?
Just for fun…let’s see how many of these you remember:
The Mickey Mouse Club – you can bet Uncle Walt made sure Annette and the rest of the Mouseketeers had high collars on those turtlenecks:
Shari Lewis and Lamb Chop – okay now, Lamb Chop could get a little frisky, as you can see in this clip with actor Fred Gwynne:
Kukla, Fran, and Ollie – well, we think you’ll agree with us that this show’s shameless plug for this washing machine is obscene:
Howdy Doody – Nothing risque here, but let’s face it, Clarabell the Clown was downright creepy – you wouldn’t let your kids within a mile of this character today:
Captain Kangaroo – No controversies here either, but you have to admit that Mr. Moose and Bunny Rabbit were subversive little guys…those knock-knock jokes always led to a massive downpour of ping-pong balls:
There you have our walk down kiddie t.v. memory lane. Television was so much simpler then, no racy outfits, no double entendres, everything was black and white. No really, it was literally black and white…we were the last house on the block to get color t.v.
