Tough economic times just seem to bring out the worst in some people, don’t they? It’s bad enough that we boomers are blamed for ruining Social Security, now we have our children – the Millennials – blaming us for ruining their lives. Get a load of Timothy Malcolm, age 25, writing Sunday in the Middletown, NY Times Herald-Record:
The economy stinks. It stunk before we started earning salaries. The job market is nonexistent. Even small colleges are filled up. The technology we mastered as curious children is sitting there, but we can’t do anything with it. No, it’s too busy. It’s being used by you people.
And the jobs? You people. The schools? Again, you people. You baby boomers. You’re why we’re waiting.
Like every generation before us, my generation has gone to school. Most of us are dangling our feet in our parents’ homes while boomers continue to work so they can make money. And put off retirement. And attempt to keep the economy afloat — you know, the economy the boomers ruined.
Excuse me? Boomers single-handedly ruined the economy?? I think we had a little help from a few other demographic groups in America…yours included. We created this mess together, junior…and I don’t see where pointing your finger at mom and dad helps to solve anything.
But wait, it gets better:
Lately, some critics have concluded that the current 20-somethings are delaying their careers, staying at home and relying on mommy and daddy because they’re lazy, or disinterested, or scared of social commitment.
I disagree, and profoundly.
The main reason we 20-somethings still sleep at mom’s house is because mom and dad won’t get out of the work force. They’re clogging the pipeline.
Okay now, I agree that much of the criticism of current 20-somethings has been harsh and unfair. You folks have the bad luck to be entering the workforce – or at least trying to – at one of the worst times in U.S. history.
But give me a break! Don’t you think mom and dad would gladly clear the way and head off to live in retirement if they could? Wake up, kid…your folks got to watch their investments and 401ks tank right along with those of everyone else. That kind of made it impossible to leave the 9-to-5 job on schedule now didn’t it?
And while we’re pointing fingers, maybe mom and dad would have had a bit more financial cushion if they hadn’t spent a significant chunk putting your little tush through college.
Okay, now here is the coup de grace:
I’m not saying boomers need to run en masse to nursing homes, but it’s time to let loose the leash of society. While you’re holding onto jobs and education, your kids are wasting away at home. Our schools are getting worse. Our politicians are whining. Our money is wilting. It’s not our fault. It’s yours.
So stop wasting our generation’s chance. And stop wasting our country’s possibilities.
With that little parting shot, this kid just reinforced the stereotype that today’s 20-somethings are self-centered whiners. “Waah, waah….nothing is our fault, it’s all your fault.” Notice he managed to blame us for just about everything but environmental destruction of the planet – and I’m pretty sure that’s just an oversight.
What a lot of nonsense. We’re all in this together, kiddo…and sitting on your parent’s couch writing cry-baby tirades in the local newspaper’s op-ed page isn’t going to be any help in solving the economic nightmare we ALL find ourselves in right now.
My advice to you, Timothy Malcolm? Stop wasting your time and energy blaming mommy and daddy, and use it to work on your resume.
My advice to your parents? I hope they still have your time-out chair handy…Timmy-boy sure needs it!
