Some of my assignments for bohemian boomer are a lot of work…long hours on the computer researching the topic, agonizing over the keyboard for just the right phrase or words. But not this assignment! When our editor suggested I put together a list of sexiest boomer men…well, let’s just say she didn’t have to ask me twice!
Our criteria: Celebrity men born during the baby boom who still got “it.” Sure, they may have been major heart throbs in their 20s, but that’s not enough for our list. Our winners are guys who have stood the test of time in terms of sexiness. Just as they did 10 – even 20 – years ago, these men make our hearts skip a beat whenever we see them in television or movies.
In fact, we think they’re actually sexier now. But don’t take our word for it; we’ve included Then and Now photos so you can be the judge. Our picks are listed here in no particular order – we love ’em all!
The Official 2010 bohemian boomer list of the Sexiest Boomer Men Alive:
George Clooney, born 1961 – He’s come along way from playing ER‘s Dr. Doug Ross on the small screen. Now, even though he’s a big Hollywood star, Clooney seems to have a great sense of humor. Why else would he let the Coen brothers cast him in so many wacky – and often humiliating – roles (see Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?, Intolerable Cruelty, and Burn After Reading).
Sam Elliott, born 1944 – Technically he’s a pre-boomer, but close enough in our opinion and he definitely makes the cut, sexy-wise. Remember swooning over this guy in the 70s film Lifeguard? (if not, you seriously need to Netflix it). You still can’t mistake his deep, smoky voice and thick moustache in recent cameo roles, like that of the airline pilot in Up In The Air with Clooney.
Johnny Depp, born 1963 – Hard to believe he started out as one of Freddy Krueger’s first victims in his film debut in A Nightmare on Elm Street. Admittedly, there was little that was sexy about his quirky portrayal of the Mad Hatter in this year’s Alice in Wonderland. But don’t despair! He’s due to steal our hearts once again as Captain Jack Sparrow in the next Pirates of the Caribbean film coming out next May.
Robert Downey, Jr., born 1965 – Born just after the official end of the baby boom, but close enough to make our cut. Isn’t it nice to see this gorgeous guy clean and sober and working steadily again. Loved him in Sherlock Holmes – even though some critics were less than kind – and can’t wait to see him in Iron Man 2!
Pierce Brosnan, born 1953 – From Remington Steele in the 80s to James Bond in the 90s, he’s been the epitome of the suave, roguish Brit (even though Brosnan is actually Irish). He’s even shown a flair for comedy in films such as The Matador and Mamma Mia! But please, Pierce, trust us on this one: no more singing!
Denzel Washington, born 1954 – Be honest; if it wasn’t for the mustache from his St. Elsewhere days, would you be able to tell which photo was Then and which was Now? This strikingly handsome leading man has aged oh, so gracefully, hasn’t he? His last movie, The Book of Eli, didn’t impress the critics but fared well at the box office. Look for Denzel this fall in a new action flick, Unstoppable.
Alec Baldwin, born 1958 – As Jack Donaghy on 30 Rock, he lamented that he just had “to get back in that bubble.” But in our opinion he’s never left it. (For an explanation of the “the bubble,” check out episode 15, Season Three by clicking here.) He may have added a few pounds in recent years, but he’s still got those gorgeous steel blue eyes and that sexy smile. It was nice to see him back up on the big screen last year opposite Meryl Streep in It’s Complicated.
There you have it! Our choices for 2010’s Sexiest Boomer Men Alive. It’s by no means a definitive list, so you tell us: Who did we miss? Who’s on the list who shouldn’t be? Which one of these guys really “floats your boat?” Just click the Comments link below and tell us what you think, or just vote for your favorite sexy boomer guy.
(editor’s note: Never fear, bb’s who are interested in the female of our species. bohemianboomer.com believes strongly in equal opportunity lust. Staff writer, Paul Payne, has volunteered for the arduous task of compiling our 2010 Sexiest Boomer Women Alive, and it will appear at a future date. I wish I could tell you exactly when, but Paul says he can’t be certain yet because, in his words, “There’s just so much research to do!”)
