Okay, it’s only the first round and everything could change when the guys tee off again today. But just for a few moments, let’s revel in what the leaderboard showed at the end of opening day of The Masters: Fred Couples – age 50 – leading the pack at 6-under-par 66, followed by Tom Watson – age 60 – only one stroke back at 67. As Couples put it, “It’s a great start for the older guys.”
Sure, sure…almost all the attention yesterday was on the “return of the Tiger,” but don’t let that overshadow the fact that guys like Couples and Watson are two great examples of the bohemian boomer creed. Oliver Wendell Holmes said it best:
Men do not quit playing because they grow old; they grow old because they quit playing.
And I swear that’s the first and last time you’ll see the bohemian quote Oliver Wendell Holmes. Good luck in the second round, Freddy and Tom!
