If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then usefulness is dependent upon the user. The Mac has plenty of tools that are great for power users, but not so much for average, everyday users. You can be experienced on the Mac for 25 years and still be average.

Quicksilver rocks. Alfred is easier to use. But different strokes for different blokes.

I have tried both Quicksilver and Alfred. Of the two, Alfred is far more intuitive and 'Mac-like'. After 25 years as a macboi, however, I have yet to find any meaningful use for either of them. Everyone loves gizmos, and these are both good, but a MacBook Pro is only as efficient as its user, and this highly experienced user has not found either of them meaningful.

Quicksilver's learning curve is a bit steep but comes together in just a couple of days of use. Keep at it and you'll reap tremendous rewards as your hands and eyes begin to coordinate differently. Type, watch, select. Then repeat. This is a massively capable app but you need to learn how to use it, and likewise, it needs to learn from you.

You can also use the utility "Alfred". It's somewhat like Quicksilver, but easier to learn.

I switched from Windows to Mac about 5 years ago. I love it. A friend turned me on to Quicksilver a couple of years ago. It's quirky but very powerful, and a much faster way to do almost anything on your Mac without using the mouse or trackpad.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, complain about it and point the finger at something else besides themselves.

I've been using macs for over 20 years.
I don't know if I am a power user, though I've made my living fixing them for much of that time.
I tried Quicksilver.

I find it far more trouble than it is worth.
